Summary of Required Hours
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program includes basic and limited advanced skills focused on the acute management and transportation of critical and emergent patients. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician has the knowledge associated with, and is expected to be competent in, all of the skills of the EMR and EMT. Additional studies includes pharmacological interventions, tracheobronchial suctioning of an already intubated patient, and intravenous therapy. This program follows the guidelines set by the National Scope of Practice Model and is designed to help prepare individuals for licensure as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician by the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Health Licensure and Regulation, Office of Emergency Medical Services. Advanced Emergency Medical Technician training is a combination of classroom instruction (lectures and hands-on practical skills) and numerous areas of clinical experience. Upon completion of the EMSA courses with a “C” or better, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry AEMT written and practical examinations. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician renders basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illness and continues this treatment while transporting these patients to the hospital.
